What is your Retirement Picture?

Being away on holiday for a couple of weeks is often the highlight of the year. The time when one can chill out and not be concerned with issues of work and to a lesser extent the financial worries of everyday life. But what will life be like when you begin the longest holiday of your life; retirement? …

More than four in ten expect to receive an income of less than £15,000 a year when they retire, a survey suggests. This research, conducted on behalf of Aegon, found 44% expect under £15,000 income per annum while only 14% expect their pensions investment alone to produce more than £15,000 a year. In addition, 87% of those questioned wanted guaranteed retirement income while 22% feared they would run out of money after they finished working.

It also says only one in three of us intend to stop working in retirement, but we claim this is out of choice rather than necessity. More than one in ten (11%) said ‘love of the job’ made them want to stay in the work force while 14% argued that they were simply too young to retire. 12% said they would like to try out a completely different career in their retirement.

Retirement isn’t the abrupt cliff edge it once was and, for many of today’s ‘baby boomers’, retirement age marks a new and exciting chapter of their lives. But if you want to make adventurous life choices and have a more flexible approach to retirement you have to know what income you’re on track to receive and plan carefully.

Don’t worry that if you live longer, you will run out of money. Don’t worry that stock market volatility will leave you in poverty. The good news is there are more retirement investment and annuity options available now to complement your changing lifestyles and retirement income need. Making the right choices for your pension investment is more important than ever.
